BOOKS IN 2013 | long day’s journey into night by eugene o’neill

i read this after a few days of fairly consistent repetition of the cast recording of next to normal, and i can’t say that i didn’t link the two works in my own mind. there are definitely similar themes - i might even say that this piece was influential upon next to normal. aaron tveit has said that edmund tyrone is his dream role, and i couldn’t help but notice a few similarities between edmund (the baby son, the mother’s favourite, slipping out of his family’s grasp and acutely aware of his own mortality) and gabe goodman.

this is a story of mental illness. it’s a visceral, intense portrayal of a family desperately trying to bury their fear. over the course of the day within which the play takes place, the characters lie and lie and lie and lie in order to protect themselves and each other. no lie is worse than their reality. and yet reality is inevitable; reality bursts into their living room, ranting and raving, at a quarter to midnight. their discomfort, their fear, their collective hopelessness literally occupies centre stage. they cannot escape from it.

i think that really good theatre and literature takes you by the hand and helps you understand the broken parts of you. this play is difficult to swallow, but so, so vital and important. eugene o’neill is saying here that you cannot hide from what scares you, and that discomfort and fear and anxiety are a part of life - but day turns to night, and the sun rises, and we go on - god, we go on - as best as we can.

and we live. we grow. we learn to call our scars something else - art, maybe - and we let them stay.
